Kizomba
Kizomba comes from Angola. It is a smooth partner dance, often described as elegant and intimate, danced to music at a moderate tempo. It is built on walking, weight transfer, listening and the quality of the connection between partners, far more than on flashy moves.
Semba
Semba is widely seen as one of kizomba's roots. Older, livelier and more rhythmic, it has more pronounced steps and a joyful, festive energy. Many experienced dancers love going back to it to reconnect with the spirit of the origins. If a festival lists semba on its programme, expect some upbeat, smiling moments.
Urban kiz
Urban kiz (or urban kizomba) developed later, notably in France. It is danced to more electronic or urban music, with a more linear look and plenty of play with pauses, slow motion and changes of dynamics. It is now one of the most visible styles at the big European events.
Tarraxo
Tarraxo is slower and more minimal. The movement focuses on the hips, tiny shifts of weight and musical tension. It takes a lot of control and subtlety, and you will often hear it late at night, when the music gets deeper.

Balkan Salsa-Bachata-Kizomba Congress (Bulgaria, 18 November)
First up, the Balkan Salsa-Bachata-Kizomba Congress starts on 18 November 2026 in Borovets, Bulgaria. Borovets is a well-known mountain resort, which gives the event an unusual setting. As the name suggests, it brings together salsa, bachata and kizomba: a great fit if you like switching between rooms, or if you are travelling with friends who do not all dance the same style.
Paris Kizomba Congress (France, 19 November)
The next day, the Paris Kizomba Congress opens on 19 November 2026 in Tremblay-en-France, in the Paris area. It is one to note, and easy to reach from all over Europe thanks to the nearby Paris airports. If you live in France, it is a chance to enjoy a big kizomba event without travelling far.
Vilnius Kizomba Reunion (Lithuania, 20 November)
On 20 November 2026, head to Vilnius, Lithuania, for the Vilnius Kizomba Reunion. The event features both kizomba and semba, good news if you enjoy the energy of the roots. With its baroque old town, Vilnius makes a lovely late-autumn city break between two parties.
Love To Dance 2 Weekender (France, 20 November)
That same day, the Love To Dance 2 Weekender gets going in Lespignan, in the south of France. With a focus on kizomba and urban kiz, it will particularly appeal to dancers who love more modern sounds. Southern France is still pleasant in November, a nice way to hold on to a little mildness.

Firenze Kizomba Salsa Bachata Festival (Italy, 22 January)

To round off the month, the Malaga Dance Congress starts on 28 January 2027 in Benalmádena, on the Costa del Sol. Snow Touch SBK Festival (France, 5 February)
This may be one of the most original ideas of the winter: the Snow Touch SBK Festival, starting on 5 February 2027 in Les Orres, a ski resort in the Southern Alps. Your level
If you are a beginner, look for an event with accessible workshops and a friendly atmosphere. If you are more experienced, focus on the quality of the socials and the variety of the music. Either way, be honest with yourself when picking your workshop level: you will learn more.
The style mix
A kizomba-only festival is a different experience from a multi-style congress. The first immerses you in one atmosphere; the second lets you mix things up or travel with salsa and bachata friends. Read the programme carefully: kizomba, semba, urban kiz and tarraxo do not always get equal time.
Your budget
Add up everything: pass, travel, accommodation, meals and transfers. A nearby festival with a pricier pass can still work out cheaper than a far-away one. Prices usually go up over the months, so booking early remains the smartest move.
Pass types
- Full pass: usually covers workshops and parties. The most complete option if you want to improve.

Golden rules on the social floor
Kizomba is a close-embrace dance, so it is built on trust and respect.
- Ask with a smile and accept a "no" gracefully. "No, thank you" is a complete answer.
- Adapt your embrace to your partner: it should always feel comfortable for both of you. If you sense any discomfort, loosen up.
- Consent comes first: no move and no particular kind of contact should ever be imposed.
- Respect other couples' space, especially on a crowded floor.
- Say "thank you" at the end of the dance. It is part of social dance culture, and it always leaves a good impression.
A great dance is not measured by the number of moves, but by what you shared for three minutes.
